Take a Peek

What you might find through a hole you peek through might surprise you.  Some times it is everything you hoped for.  This funny instillation advert is a witty way to hype a soon to open Lingerie store.  Take a peek.

The Blogs New Look

Is this header just a little too clip art-y?  I was just a quick paint job in illustrator.  I am not sure how much I like it.  Let me know people.

So you need a typeface?

A terrific infographic that will help make your decision just a little easier.

Take a look at the full resolution graphic here.

SANAA on the EPFL

Though I don't talk about Architecture on this blog particularly often, I came upon this short film and thought that it was worth seeing.

The EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne), The Rolex Learning Centre in Lausanne, Switzerland, was designed by this year's Pritzker recipients SANAA.  The building looks amazing and the explanation from the designers is very interesting.

Views of the Arch

Two Shots from my hotel in St.Louis

The Arch

Pardon spelling and punctuation as I am writing from my phone.
I lay in bed on the 13th story of a St.Louis hotel. Out my window the river and the Arch. Easily the best view I have ever had of the Arch, I am not at the base, but it still towers 30+ stories above me. Saarinen died befor the Arch was completed. Could he have truly imagined the beauty of the structure. It's shape is so simple yet it holds a complexity that is almost impossible to grasp. America needs more Arches. Object that may only do one thing. One thing very beautifully.

Shel Silverstein on The Johnny Cash Show

This post was prompted by news of a tribute album to be released June 8th.  Andrew Bird and My Morning Jacket, among others, lend their time and talent to pay homage to a true great in the creative world.  From his best known work writing poetry for children, to his work for playboy, to his song writing, Shel Silverstein has had an impact on so many, including me.  His positive message and always interesting delivery make him one of the most unique artists of the 20th century.  Enjoy this touching moment with Johnny Cash and song to Shel's father.

Spacious Thoughts

This is perhaps the most specially beautiful 2D video I have ever seen.  I have often talked about the ideas of perception and parallax, but this video is just doing it right.  "Spacious Thoughts" by NASA ft. Kool Keith and Tom Waits is a tour de force of mostly 2d/flash/vector graphics.

Pixel

I am sure many of you have already seen this, but it needs to be seen again. Directed by Patrick Jean, Pixel shows us a world were space invaders are a real threat.

Fly Advertising

A German advertising group has come up with a wonderful take on mobile adverts.  Not only do I love this I think I am going to incorporate this into the next gallery opening I have.

World Architecture Map

Chances are you are hearing this here first!!  As of this week the internet has a new site that could easily be a game changer.  The World Architecture Map is a searchable database of Architecture of interest around the world.  The homepage will point out Architecture in your area including information on the buildings and links to Flickr images with matching tags.  Currently there are 2565 buildings in the database.  All of the information on the site is collected and cataloged by one person.  The hope is to eventually have the content added to by visitors along with ratings and conversation.  The idea and realization of the site comes from Botham Design a one man show, and a former classmate of mine.  Check out the site and see what is near you.

Vhils

Artist Alexander Farto AKA Vhils, I believe of London, has a knack for the epic.  With street art, billboard work, paper, wood, and installations, his works are simple yet deep.  His Wall art was what first caught my eye. By means of subtractive carving into the walls and soot of abandoned or neglected spaces he gives a sorrowful life to that is all too appropriate.  His works span from Moscow to Italy, Portugal, London and NYC, all in spaces that most would probably never see.  As is the nature of these places, it can only be assumed that they are not long for this world as progress will eventually catch up as these spaces will be demolished.  That fact seems to make these images that much more beautiful.  The idea that these images are as mortal as the faces they depict is so evocative.  In certian ways reminding me of Goodbye Art.

Make sure to visit his site and check out his other works.  His Metal work and Installations are particularly beautiful.

Every Road A Runway

Recently I happened upon a blog written by an old friend and band mate, oddly enough.  Beth has to be one of the most fashionable spirits I have ever known.  The blog Every Road a Runway highlights her fashion sense, while updating the world on the best of the Milwaukee fashion scene.  Her personal photography riddles the site with unique fashion ideas and takes on designers that can only be found on her blog.
